Most of us don't listen to ourselves very closely. Yet the words we use give us messages about how we think about ourselves and the world in which we live. The words we use reflect our attitudes and beliefs. Whether we are conscious of it or not, our language affects our experience. Our experience confirms our expectations.
We begin hearing messages about who we are from the time we are infants. We usually accept them and live up to them because, at the time, we have little choice. Regardless if these messages are positive or negative we tend to take them to be true and act accordingly. They become a self-fulfilling prophecy. "You are such a slowpoke." "Aren't you pretty." "Can't you do anything right?" "You always have the best ideas."
The words define the image we carry of ourselves. Much of that image and the accompanying words have been relegated to our unconscious mind, where it continues to act on our beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours. Until we can bring that image and those words into our awareness, we have no control over them. By watching your language you will begin to notice which of your thoughts are positive and are working for you, and which are negative and working against you. Then you are in a position of power to make any changes you choose.
